Depression is no more common people’s affair. There are many famous faces who have either suffered from or succumbed to depression. Manic depression otherwise known as bipolar personality disorder (BPD) has been reported in many celebrities including Hollywood’s biggest superstar Jim Carry. Many famous people enlisted here are suffering or have suffered the chronic mental illness.
1. Kurt Cobain
Thousands of people are still seeking after information about Kurt Cobain’s death. However, speculations have been made that chronic depression paved the way to superstar’s suicidal instincts. Kurt was found dead at his home, located in Seattle, Washington, on 8th April 1994. His body was found perforated by a shotgun in his head. The autopsy report confirmed that Kurt Cobain committed suicide.
In an interview with Kurt’s cousin, Bev Cobain affirmed that Kurt had been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder at a very young age, followed by bipolar disorder. As a child, he always found his solace in the bedroom closet. “I hate myself and I want to die” was Kurt’s personal mantra. Even the lyrics of his songs displayed extreme concoction of emotions and complexity of moods.
2. Jim Carrey
It is really sad to see the name of such a superstar in the list of depressed people. Jim Carrey’s depression came out as a shock to his huge fan following. In 2009, Jim Carrey made an open confession about his poor mental health. He confessed that he went for treatment and was even going through Prozac treatment. Causes for such a quick-witted humorous comedian cum actor falling in the traps of depression are still under speculations. But his miserable childhood holds the responsibility for his mental illness. It has been known so far that he dropped out of high school when he was just 15 years old. Being unable to receive an education like any kid of his age laid the foundation of his poor mental health. His father lost his job which made him work as a janitor for supporting his family. It has also been noted that they moved out from a house to van. However, the braveheart acknowledged his mental illness publicly and came out as hale and hearty as ever.
3. Justin Timberlake
However the star has bee lucky so far, but life isn’t as perfect as it seems to be. Started his career on Mickey Mouse Club and established himself as a solo singer and an actor. The pleasure of his success has always been hampered by his OCD issues. He says that he has been constantly battling with his obsessive thoughts, his obsession for perfection and being selective in allowing foods to his refrigerator. To add to his misery, he has also complained about his attention deficit disorder. It is also claimed that the actor has been fighting with his present girlfriend Jessica Biel who is current living at his house in Los Angeles. And to our surprise, the cause of conflicts have always been the contents of the fridge!
4. Jon Hamm
He accepted that he was in a typical state of clinical depression. After his parents’ death, he fell victim to chronic depression. He spoke about his condition, “It was the classic definition of clinical depression; you want to stay in bed all day, you sleep till four o’clock in the afternoon. I didn’t have any drive to get up and do anything. It was rough; it stinks.” He was prescribed with Prozac and he continued the prescription for over a month.
5. Jean-Claude Van Damme
In 1996, he checked into a rehab but dropped the plan only a week later. After completing the shooting of Knockoff in mid-1997, he became suicidal. Later on, he was diagnosed with rapid cycling bipolar disorder and was prescribed with Sodium valproate. He said on cocaine addiction, “About the turning point in his life when he faced his cocaine addiction and quit cold turkey, he said, “It became a point where I wanted to die. I didn’t have any reasons to live. Maybe it’s selfish to say that, but I was not excited about anything. Then you have to find back your self-esteem. And then, slowly, every piece of yourself becomes precious again. One day it’s, like, either you pass or you don’t. It’s not the drugs, it’s a problem with yourself, which you have to cure.”
6. Pete Wentz
Fallout guy Pete Wentz opened about his mental illness earlier this year. He also recalled his drug overdose where he took a handful of Ativan. He says recalling the memory of the incident, “It had more to do with being depressed. I wasn’t thinking of killing myself. I’ve never really called it a suicide attempt. I just wanted my head to be completely turned off.” After the fateful breakup with his ex-wife Ashlee Simpson in 2011, Pete had to play Mr. Mom for his son, Bronx Mowgli. He stopped paying attention to his physical appearances and had outgrown beard. But, everything was painted in red for the American rockstar when fell in love again with model, Meagan Camper and welcomed his another child Saint LAzslo.
7. Buzz Aldrin
The second person to walk on the moon was also not spared the agony of mental illness. Due to contradictory views between him and his family, he fell prey to chronic depression. His poor mental health leads to splitting of his family and ultimately divorce. He blames his mother’s suicide, having grown up in an alcoholic family made him fall into the depressive gorge. This emotional turmoil leads to his two failed marriages. But luckily, Aldrin didn’t succumb to his illness. He recovered, fell in love and had a stable relationship with his third wife.
8. Zach Braff
Zach confessed in an interview that he was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder when he was just 10. He went into slight depression when he has declined the role of young man in Albee’s The Play about the Baby. Right after he got his show Scrubs, he went into a chronic state of depression despite having all he wanted. Although he recovered through his illness by acknowledging the fact that it is alright to feel as such.
9. Scott Stapp
Last year, Scott step managed to be in the headlines for his erratic behaviour which led to his 72-hour long psychiatric hold in November. In a candid interview with People, he made a confession that he was suffering from bipolar disorder. He also disclosed, saying, “I was hallucinating. I drove around the United States for a month, following an angel that I saw on the hood of my car.” He also said that his illness made him think his family was “involved in ISIS.” After his encounter with such unfavorable incidents, he began receiving treatment.
10. Jim Morrison
It seemed that Jim Morrison was trying to escape a demon in Paris where he last partied out. His long-time girlfriend Pamela Coursan told police that they went to party at a notorious Parisian nightclub, where Jim got sick and puked out blood. Later on, he was spotted dead in his bathtub by his girlfriend Pamela. His friends always told that Jim was obsessed with the thought of death.
